Khandugadahalli and the Someshwara Swamy Temple – A Personal Journey

Khandugadahalli is a small, quiet village, nestled about 7 km from Kadur taluk in the Chikkamagaluru district. In the heart of this village stands the Someshwara Swamy Temple—a place that, for me, holds a connection far deeper than stone and mortar. It’s a place woven into the fabric of my own family history, a spot where my ancestors found something unique, and whose devotion has echoed across generations.
Growing up in Mysore, I admit I felt no strong pull towards this temple or even my native place, Kadur. My occasional visits with parents and relatives were nothing more than a ritual. For a long time, I wasn't what you would call a believer (and honestly, I still don’t consider myself deeply religious). Yet, with every visit, a subtle, inexplicable draw began to take hold.
The Shift in Perspective
There’s a popular Kannada proverb—“Sankata bandaga Venkataramana”—which perfectly translates to, "we remember God only in times of trouble." That line describes my younger self perfectly. My core belief was that man created God, not the other way around, and I placed all my faith in myself. But as life unfolded and I navigated its complexities, my perspective slowly but surely shifted. Today, I feel a genuine and deep connection with Someshwara Swamy, a feeling that transcends mere ancestral obligation.
The Divine Verdict of "Beedhi Basappa"
Devotees can place their wishes and doubts before this god and seek a divine verdict. The ritual is simple yet striking: the priest applies cotton dipped in thick oil onto the idol. If the cotton falls to the right, the answer is an affirmative “yes.” If it falls to the left, the answer is a clear “no.” I was, naturally, skeptical at first. But when I tried it myself, the outcome aligned perfectly with reality. It was an experience that left me truly stunned and deepened the mystery of the place.
The Joy of Giving Back: Anna Dhaana
Another beautiful tradition here is the “Anna Dhaana” (free meal service) held every Monday. Devotees contribute generously to this cause, and the temple authorities ensure that hot meals are provided to all. In our fast-paced modern lives, opportunities to give back to the community and witness such selfless service can be rare. Being a part of this tradition feels deeply fulfilling and grounding.
The Miracle of the Jaathra Mahotsav
The most inspiring story associated with the temple is perhaps that of the Jaathra Mahotsav (held once every twelve years).
Once, during a period of severe drought, the organizers were forced to consider canceling the grand event due to the crippling scarcity of water. The temple priest, however, conveyed that the deity had “instructed” them to go ahead with the preparations as planned. The organizers were worried about the logistics, but what happened next was nothing short of miraculous: on the eve of the festival, Khandugadahalli received heavy, torrential rain. Remarkably, it rained only in this village and the surrounding area. Wells, borewells, and tanks filled up overnight, and the Mahotsav was celebrated grandly without any hurdles.
Another fascinating aspect of this event, held once every twelve years, is the unique ritual where lamps are lit using water drawn from the nearby Enne Hole (ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹೊಳೆ). No matter how modern the world becomes, some of our traditions and customs remain truly wondrous and awe-inspiring.
The Someshwara Swamy Temple is no longer just another place of worship connected to my family; it has become a sanctuary of peace, a source of faith, and a place of true wonder. Today, it is one of the places I feel compelled to visit again and again.
The Nearby Temple: Seeking Blessings at Chowdeshwari Amma
I recognize that animal sacrifice is a contentious practice, and I am aware of the debate surrounding animal welfare. However, this is a tradition that has been observed for generations in this community. Therefore, we have chosen to leave the question of its rightness or wrongness at the feet of Swamy Someshwara and Chowdamma herself.
The temple administration has made excellent arrangements within the Chowdamma Temple premises for the convenience of devotees. After the offerings are made, there are facilities available for cooking the meat and for serving meals to the assembled family and friends. The environment surrounding the temple complex is also remarkably peaceful and serene, offering a quiet space for reflection despite the nature of the rituals performed there.
